Year of the Defib: Building confidence to save lives

As part of our Year of the Defib campaign, a free community training session was held at Wedmore Village Hall on 28th May, helping local residents gain the confidence and skills needed to respond to a sudden cardiac arrest.

The session focused on recognising cardiac arrest, delivering effective CPR, and using a public access defibrillator (AED). Attendees were given the opportunity to learn and practise these life-saving skills in a supportive and relaxed environment, helping to remove the fear and uncertainty that can prevent people from acting in an emergency.

There are over 100,000 Out of hospital Cardiac Arrests in the UK each year, and immediate action from bystanders can dramatically improve a person’s chance of survival. Through initiatives such as the Year of the Defib campaign, we aim to empower communities with the knowledge and confidence to step forward and help when every second counts.

The response from those who attended the Wedmore session was overwhelmingly positive. Feedback highlighted not only the value of the practical training but also the engaging and relatable delivery style.

The event organiser commented:

“Thank you so much for your time and energy to support the Defib training session yesterday. The delivery of the session had a great impact on those people who attended – everyone said they thoroughly enjoyed it and were grateful to you for delivering this vital information and giving your time so generously. Shane, you are so good at explaining quite a difficult subject and, because you know the local area so well, people really related to possibly encountering such an event in their own environment.”

The success of the Wedmore event demonstrates the appetite within local communities for accessible, practical first aid education. We are now looking to deliver further free Year of the Defib sessions at additional venues across the area, helping even more people gain the confidence to act in a cardiac emergency.

If your community group, village hall, organisation or workplace would be interested in hosting a FREE training session, we would love to hear from you. sorrel@reflexfirstaidtraining.co.uk
